Three Ohio Drivers Sue Ford Over EcoBoost Engine

Three Ohioans have filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Columbus, Ohio against Ford Motors alleging that the V-6 EcoBoost engine is defective. The lawsuit claims that the auto maker issued a bulletin about the engine to dealerships but failed to notify vehicle owners about the problems with the expensive engine.

According to the lawsuit, the EcoBoost engine stutters, shudders, shakes, loses power during acceleration, and stalls. The plaintiffs also allege that more than 100 owners have filed complaints about the 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), yet Ford has not issued a recall of the engines. USA Today reports that one plaintiff’s F-150 pickup loses power during acceleration, while the two married plaintiffs say their 2010 Ford Taurus SHO loses power and stalls.

Ford wouldn’t talk to reporters from USA Today about the lawsuits, however, Ford spokesperson Mark Schirmer said the auto maker is “committed to the EcoBoost brand, which is important to Ford.” The EcoBoost engine offers more power with better mileage than the typical 5-liter V8 engine, though the EcoBoost can add more than $2,000 to the price tag.

The EcoBoost entered the market in 2009 as an option for 2010-2013 Ford Flex, Lincoln MKT and MKS models, the 2011-2013 F-150 pickups, 2013 Explorer Sport models, and is equipped on the Taurus SHO. Currently, none EcoBoost engines have been recalled, and the NHTSA has yet to begin an investigation into the allegedly defective engine.

The Ford EcoBoost lawsuit says that last year the company issued a bulletin to dealer mechanics regarding how to correct the 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine “intermittent stumble and/or misfire” which is “more noticeable during humid or damp conditions” and “intermittent engine surge during moderate to light loads,” USA Today reports. The auto maker also made a change on the assembly line.

The EcoBoost engine has had trouble before including a Consumer Reports finding that some vehicles with the EcoBoost engine, like the Ford Fusion, fared worse than other types of engines regarding performance and fuel economy. Ford issued a recall last year of the Escape SUV and Fusion for potential fire risks from leaking fuel and coolent.

A similar lawsuit has been filed in a Louisiana District Court.
