Ohio State Pratrol Looks To Reduce The Amount of Ohio Drunk Driving Accidents and Fatalities By Beefing Up Patrols and Check Points

With the holidays fast approaching, many people choose to consume larger amounts of alcohol than other days of the year. This increases the number of intoxicated drivers on the road and leading to an increase of DUI charges and Ohio drunk driving fatalities. Even though the Ohio Highway Patrol has spent much of 2013 and 2014 cracking down on Ohio drunk driving, the risks of serious injury or death are still there.

In 2014, the Ohio Highway Patrol has spent a lot of time and energy cracking down on drunk drivers and Ohio drunk driving fatalities. According to Cleveland News Net 5, the Ohio Highway Patrol has increased its alcohol-related stops across the state. An analysis from News Net 5 found that the Ohio Highway Patrol has stopped an alarming 21,732 cars for suspected Ohio drunk driving in 2014. Not all of these stops resulted in Ohio DUI charges, but the State Highway Patrol was able to catch a higher number of drunk drivers as a result of the extra attention given to the statewide problem.

According to Ohio State Highway Patrol records, 423 more stops for drunken driving were made in 2014 over 2013. Luckily, these extra stops have also cut down on serious injuries and fatalities on the road related to drunk driving. The Ohio Highway Patrol report states that in 2012, 470 people died as a result of drunk driving accidents in Ohio. In 2013, after the police increased their efforts to control drunk drivers, the number of Ohio drunk driving fatalities dropped to 300 deaths. As of November 2014, there have only been 264 deaths related to drunk driving in Ohio.

As the holiday season continues, roads become more dangerous. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more people are victims of Ohio drunk driving fatalies in accidents on Christmas and New Year’s Eve/Day than any other day of the year. Each year, between 400 and 600 people die from Ohio drunk driving accidents during these two holiday periods. This is a much higher average than everyday driving throughout the rest of the year- when only about 30 people die from drunk driving accidents each day.

Driving while intoxicated is a serious risk. Ohio drivers can stay safest by avoiding any kind of driving on the peak drinking holidays even if they are not drinking. Even a person who is not impaired by alcohol can still be killed by a drunk driver. The safest way to remain safe on Ohio roads this holiday season is to avoid driving on these dangerous days. Night driving tends to be more dangerous than day driving as fewer people drink heavily during daylight hours. Stay safe this holiday season by drinking responsibly, never driving while intoxicated in any way, and avoiding any driving on the days surrounding Christmas and New Year’s Day.
