Defective Crib Mattress Recall Issued By Ikea After Reports Of Infants Injured After Becoming Stuck In

Inexpensive global furniture giant Ikea is voluntarily recalling nearly 200,000 infant mattresses after reports that two infants were trapped between the mattress and crib wall while using the mattress. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the defective crib mattress recall was issued after it was found the gap between the mattress and the crib wall is larger than allowed by federal regulations, which enables infants to become entrapped.

The defective crib mattress recall involves Ikea Vyssa crib mattresses with the model names of :

  • Vackret
  • Vinka
  • Spelevink
  • Sola
  • Slummer

According to the CPSC, the defective crib mattress recall involves mattresses with a manufacturing date of May 4, 2014 or earlier and were manufactured in Mexico. Caregivers can inspect the manufacturing date found in Month-DD-YYYY on the mattress cover. The CPSC and Ikea have stated that any gap larger than two finger widths between the mattress and crib wall indicates a defective mattress. The CPSC has received two reports of infants getting trapped in the gap, but no injuries have been reported as of January 2015.

The Ikea crib mattress recall states consumers should inspect all mattresses from Ikea to ensure no other mattress poses the same entrapment risk. All Vyssa mattresses are affected and should be removed from the crib immediately. Ikea has stated that all bedding should be stripped before the mattress is tested for gaps. A gap of more than two finger widths is not in alignment with federal regulations. Ikea recommends only using Ikea-brand fitted sheets with any of its infant mattresses for maximum safety.
