John Crawford Jr and Attorney Michael Wright To Discuss Call For Release of Beavercreek Walmart Video and DOJ To Open Civil Rights Investigate

Attorney Michael Wright of Wright & Schulte LLC and John Crawford Jr will be guests of “What’s At Stake” radio program with Host Verna Avery Brown on WPFW 89.3 FM in D.C. Mr. Wright and the father of John Crawford III will discuss the request to release the Beavercreek Walmart shooting video and the request for the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate the fatal shooting of John Crawford III by Beavercreek police while he was shopping at Walmart on August 5, 2014.

Attorney Wright, who is representing the Crawford family, and John Crawford III’s father were able to view parts of the video with Attorney General Mike DeWine on August 19th, but the video has yet to be released to the public.
The call for the release of the video has grown with the involvement of Facebook groups and online petitions created to urge the Ohio Attorney General to publicly release the video of Beavercreek police shooting John Crawford III inside the Beavercreek Walmart. The Ohio Attorney General has stated that he will not publicly release the surveillance video surrounding the fatal shooting of Mr. Crawford despite the growing efforts by Mr. Wright, The Crawford family and supporters. Stating it would be “playing with dynamite” because it could compromise the investigation and taint a potential jury pool.

John Crawford III was fatally shot by police responding to a 911 call that there was a man waving a rifle in the Beavercreek Walmart. Reports have stated that Mr. Crawford refused to drop the weapon. Attorney Wright states the video shows a difference account of the August 5th shooting and calls it “It was the unjustified killing of this young man. It was unnecessary. It did not have to occur. And he was doing absolutely nothing wrong when engaged by Beavercreek police department.” John Crawford’s father stated, “You can clearly see people walk past him, and they didn’t think anything about it. Everybody was just kind of minding their own business,” his father added. “He wasn’t acting in any type of way that he would have been considered menacing, if you will.”

Since the viewing of the video by authorities, John Crawford’s death has been listed as a homicide and a special prosecutor has been assigned to handle the case. A grand jury in Hamilton County will begin hearing evidence on the fatal shooting of Mr. Crawford later this month.

Michael Wright and other attorneys at Wright & Schulte LLC have also urged the DOJ to open a civil rights investigation into the Beavercreek Walmart shooting.
