Chrysler Issues Dodge Ram Recall of 46,000 2013 Ram 1500 Pick-Ups Due To Software Failure

A Dodge Ram Recall has been issued for 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 pick-ups due to software failure. The software failure causes the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system to disable when four wheel-drive models are started.

Chrysler has issued a Dodge Ram Recall involving 46,000 of its 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 Pick-ups. The Dodge Ram recall affects 2013 Dodge Ram pick-ups manufactured between June 26, 2012 and February 5, 2013. Owners of the Dodge Ram 1500 may notice the Electronic Stability Control System light is not illuminated when the vehicle is started. Manually turning on the light may not cause the system to be fully functional. The Dodge Ram recall is expected to begin in August when Chrysler dealers will implement a software upgrade to fix the failure. No injuries have been reported as a result of this issue. ESC Failure in Dodge Ram 1500

According to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), the risk of a crash is more likely with an ESC software failure. The ESC system allows the Dodge Ram 1500 to stay upright and to travel in the right direction if a driver loses control or swerves. Effective with the 2012 model year, a NHTSA-imposed rule required ESC in all vehicles with a gross weight of 10,000 pounds or less.

2013 Has Been A Busy Year for Chrysler Recalls

This is the second recall of the Dodge Ram 1500 this year. In June, 30,000 Dodge Ram 1500 vehicles were recalled to repair a faulty warning light on the dashboard. The issue also caused a recall of the 2013 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 models.

Also in June, Chrysler agreed to recall older model Jeep Libertys and Jeep Grand Cherokees. 1.56 million vehicles were recalled at NHTSA’s request because the vehicles could potentially catch on fire if rear-ended. Initially, the automaker threatened to file papers refusing to comply with NHTSA’s request. Jeep Libertys from model years 2002 to 2007 and Grand Cherokees from model years 1993 to 2004 were affected. Of a lesser impact, the 2013 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 trucks was recalled in June to correct an issue that can cause front axle damage. Approximately 1,050 vehicles are affected. Approximately 4,500 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees built between January 22 and March 8, 2013 have been recalled to correct a LED headlight issue.
