Ohio Traffic Cameras: Do They Violate Drivers Rights
Ohio lawmakers are considering a bill that would ban the use of Ohio traffic cameras as Hamilton County Judge rules they violate the rights of Ohio drivers.
In March, Hamilton County Judge Robert Ruehlman ruled that the use of Ohio traffic cameras in and around the Cincinnati area violated the rights of Ohio drivers saying they were “nothing more than a high-tech game of 3 CARD MONTY,” and that their use “is a scam that the motorists can’t win.” Judge Ruehlman went on to say that hearings requested by drivers who contest the $105 citations are “nothing more than a sham!” as the driver must defend themselves against a report “produced by the company that owns the speed monitoring unit,” Fox News reports.
Ban on Ohio Traffic Cameras
Now, Ohio lawmakers are considering a ban of the use of traffic cameras in Ohio, with proponents saying they are used only for the sake of making money and that they infringe on privacy and advocates saying they save lives and increase traffic safety. Thousands of citations have been issued across the state resulting in millions in fees and fines against drivers. In fact, The Plain Dealer reports that Cleveland alone has collected over $47 million from its speed and red light camera usage. Speaking in front of the Ohio House Committee against the use of traffic cameras, the Plain Dealer writes that Gary Daniels, associate director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio said, “While the design of the justice system is to ensure we are innocent until proven guilty, use of these cameras turns that idea on its head. People alleged to have broken the law are presumed guilty.”
However, those advocating for the use of traffic lights say they protect the rights of citizens. One such advocate told the committee that her daughter died in a traffic accident in 2002. She said, “If our daughter Sarah could be here today, she would ask each of you, ‘What about my right to live my life and raise my children?’ She cannot be here today because she was killed by a man running a light at 55 miles per hour.”
